Don't know about tribes but there was an explorer John Honeycutt. Interesting reading here:

My grandmother was placed on the rolls of a Choctaw Tribe and was deemed “full-blood” Choctaw. I was raised in a “white” world, but have always honored and treasured my “Indian” heritage. I have never asked anything from anyone for my indian heritage, but always felt honored to have that blood in me. I may not be full blood Choctaw in my physical body, but I am full blood in my heart, and honor my Choctaw ancestors. In fact, from what I have been told, I am 1/4 Choctaw, 1/4 Cherokee, and 1/8 Apache. Not sure about any other blood in me. I just wish the Choctaw and other Indian tribes did not shun me, just because I don’t know how to prove on paper that I am Native American, because in my heart and soul, I am.
